Feasibility study of drilling pipe string monitoring with RFID technology

Feasibility study of drilling pipe string monitoring with RFID technology

One of the most important equipments used in drilling oil and gas wells are drill pipes, which are frequently used in drilling operations. Any failure in these pipes will stop the drilling operation, review the drilling string, and in some cases, along with the operation of finding and removing the residue, or in the case of a critical condition, it will lead to the blocking of the drilled path and the creation of an alternative path. The implementation of these additional operations will cause loss of time and added costs and lack of profits in the macro view. The new solution in monitoring and assessing the health and calculating and maintaining the operation history of drilling pipes is to make intelligent and mechanize the monitoring of the performance of the pipes. In this method, by equipping drill pipes with RFID tags and reading them when entering and exiting the well and calculating the performance of the pipe and its relative location in the well and the approximate working conditions of the pipe, the performance of the pipe is measured and a proper report is made. will be given to the operator. Based on this report and the pipe operation records, the operator will decide when to use the pipe and when to take it out of circulation. A timely decision to remove high-functioning pipes will reduce the risk of damage caused by deposits and cuts, and in acute cases, pipe failure on the way to well drilling, and save on drilling costs, the duration of pipe operation, etc. Considerable search will happen. The Department of Research and Technology of Smart Control and Monitoring of the Persian Gulf University was able to successfully complete the feasibility of this project with the effective cooperation with the Oil and Gas Research Center of the University. This feasibility study has been supported by Iran’s National Drilling Company.
